Adoption in Higher Ed

When looking at raw headcount, WordPress has more users than all the competing content management systems combined. It is used on nearly six times as many sites as any other CMS. As a result of its huge user base, and the open community, it has greater support than any other system in use.

Let’s look at the numbers. According to BuiltWith, WordPress is used on 65% of the top million sites on the Web (http://trends.builtwith.com/cms); over three times as many as Joomla and Drupal combined. According to W3Tech, WordPress is used on more than 58% of websites that use a CMS; it is used on over 33% of the Web overall (including sites that are not using a CMS).

WordPress can scale quite successfully to cover millions of active users. Huge properties including NBC sports, Ted, TechCrunch, Quartz, CNN, Time magazine and so many more have shown that with the right infrastructure, WordPress is up to the task. Not only can it scale under load, multi-site networks with vast groups of unique sites using a common framework have become the norm. From Washington State to CUNY, universities have been rolling out substantial aggregations with 1000s of sites on a single WordPress build.

Within higher education, many smaller projects, full departments, and even central properties are powered using WordPress. While it is far from a comprehensive list, a bit of research has validated the following organizations:

Harvard Law School, Stanford (Law, Medical, Central Communications…), MIT Sloan, UC Berkeley, Columbia, Cornell University, Brown University, Duke University, University of Washington, University of Denver, University of Oklahoma, University of Oregon, Loyola Marymount University (Los Angeles), Washington State, University of British Columbia, University of Texas, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Washington University, San Jose State University, Ohio State, Northwestern University, Allegheny College, Boise State University, North Carolina State University, Covenant Theological Seminary, Washtenaw Community College, University of Central Arkansas, Maryville University, Lafayette College, Southern Arkansas University at Magnolia, the University of Rhode Island, Erikson Institute, New Mexico State University, the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Blue Ridge Community and Technical College, Georgia State University, John Carroll University, the University of Maine, St. Mary’s University, Nicholls State University, University of Maine at Augusta, University of Mary Washington, The University of Alabama, New York University, University of Maine at Augusta, University of Birmingham, University of Florida Health, IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law, Iowa State University, Brescia University College, Spring Arbor University, Hampshire College, John Caroll University, Washington University in St. Louis, Rutgers University, New Mexico State University, Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, Eastern Wyoming College, Dawson College, Culver Academies, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Old Dominion University, University of Michigan, Smith College, Eastern Washington University, Western University, Middle Tennessee State University, Brandon University, Williams College, Georgia State University, Villanova, University of Findlay, Carleton University, University of Richmond, Williams College, University at Buffalo, University of Tennessee, Bellevue College, James Madison University, University of NC Greensboro, BYU, Missouri State University, Walsh University, Wheaton College, Whitworth University, Indiana University, Saint Joseph’s University, University of Westminster, Pasadena City College, Cornell University, Berea College, Williams College, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Bryn Mawr College, UNC Charlotte, IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law, University of Wisconsin-Madison, New Mexico State University, UC Berkeley, Elon University, University of Missouri, Boston University, Iowa State University, Monash University, University of Arkansas, Virginia Commonwealth University, Allegheny College, Lafayette College, University of Maine, Washington University in St. Louis, Sacramento State, Bates College, and 13,000 more!
